Shock plan to mitigate the impact of Covid-19 in the districts worst affected

19/04/2020 - 14:19

COVID-19. A series of measures are being implemented in Nou Barris, Sant Andreu, Sant Martí, Horta-Guinardó and Ciutat Vella.

A shock plan is being launched in the neighbourhoods with the highest numbers of people infected with Covid-19, in the districts of Nou Barris, Sant Andreu, Sant Martí, Horta-Guinardó and Ciutat Vella. The plan focuses on strengthening cleaning and increased mediation to provide information and detect vulnerability in the streets.

Specific cleaning service

A specific cleaning service will include the disinfection of waste containers with a sodium hypochlorite solution and provides a boost for cleaning around medical centres and residences. This service has been operating in the districts of Horta-Guinardó, Nou Barris and Sant Andreu since early April and will steadily be rolled out in other city neighbourhoods.

Mediation to detect vulnerability and anti-social behaviour

A total of 60 mediators are being deployed in teams, coordinated by district offices and informing people in the streets about the need for home-confinement and compliance with the health measures in queues for essential services and food shops.

The mediators are also tasked with detecting people in vulnerable situations because of the illness or who are carrying out activities that place them at risk. Calls are also being made to users of over fifty local facilities and eight projects from the Neighbourhood Plan.

More information means more protection

Over sixteen thousand posters have been distributed in main streets, squares, entrances to buildings and shops, while the city police have stepped up their presence to strengthen basic information on cleaning, protection and confinement, and to combat non-compliance.

Vehicles with loudhailers are being used in the streets to give information about home-confinement, cleaning and protection, mainly in Catalan and Spanish, but also in English, Urdu and Chinese. The cars are circulating in the main streets in Nou Barris and Horta-Guinardó, as well as in places where there is a risk of build-ups of people and around supermarkets.

Support for groups most in need

A programme will be ready next week specifically for people and families at risk through contact or who have already tested positive for Covid-19 and whose circumstances make it more difficult to comply with the regulation on self-isolation or confinement at home.

The programme will include alternatives for the provision of food at home, special cleaning resources, protection materials, waste collection and residential alternatives in hotels and flats.

These measures are designed to strengthen others already in place, such as converted hotels and sports centres and home-delivered meals.
