Collection of Dioramas by Engelbrecht
Collection of Dioramas by Engelbrecht
Around the second third of the 18th century, the German engraver Martin Engelbrecht created small dioramas or scenic boxes that reproduced biblical, historical or fantasy passages, using various prints that were cut out and assembled and that corresponded to the elements that make up a theater - proscenium, breaks, backdrops - engraved in burin on copper.
These small dioramas, which have been considered the forerunners of paper theatres, have become highly prized objects for collectors for their graphic and historical value and for their fragile and even ephemeral nature.
The Museum preserves several specimens, of which 7 are on display: the religious scenes of Paradise, Noah's Ark, the Wedding at Cana, the Slaughter of the Innocents, the Flagellation and Calvary, and a court scene.
