The fan was an indispensable addition to women's clothing in the 19th century, which any distinguished lady had to know how to wear with elegance, discretion or coquetry. It encompassed most social classes and its widespread and everyday use lasted until the 20th century. There were all kinds and for all occasions, as beyond being an object of practical use, it also became a basic element of a new way of communicating in society. It even had its own code collected by several manuals.
The nearly three hundred exhibited in this room show the success of the range and allow you to walk through a wide chronology, from the 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century. A great diversity of techniques, typologies and materials is exhibited. The motifs represented are diverse: decorative, allegorical, mythological, historical or landscape repertoires. There are some commemorative ones that stand out, such as the one for the wedding of Ferdinand VII of Spain with his niece Maria Cristina of Naples, or that of the first Universal Exhibition of 1851 and that of the Paris Exhibition of 1900. There are also others with dedications, such as the one that belonged to the Italian soprano Adelina Patti or with signatures of prominent composers such as Puccini, Sararate, Pedrell or Saint-Saëns.
