Following the coincidence in Barcelona of the exhibitions Zurbarán (super)natural at the National Art Museum of Catalonia and Women of their word at the Frederic Marès Museum, in which a painting by Josefa de Ayala or Óbidos (Seville, 1630- Óbidos, Portugal, 1684), from the Machado de Castro National Museum in Coimbra, this painter will be linked to Zurbarán.
Josefa Ayala da Figueira, better known as Josefa d'Óbidos, was the most important painter of the Portuguese Baroque . He was born in Sevilla de Zurbarán in 1630, but soon moved to Portugal. Emancipated as a professional and independent painter, her specialization in still life and religious painting aimed at women's convents brings us closer to a unique interpretation of the master's mysticism and plasticity.
