The Frederic Marès Museum is a unique collector's museum that preserves the collections gathered by its founder, the sculptor Frederic Marès (1893-1991), and which, through his donation, became part of the heritage of the city of Barcelona in 1946. Two years later, this museum was inaugurated, located in part of the former Royal Palace of the Counts of Barcelona, in the heart of the Gothic Quarter, whose courtyard or orchard
Frederic Marès turned sculpture into something more than an artistic vocation. Throughout his life he gathered an extensive sculpture collection hispanic, from ancient times to the 19th century, in which polychrome religious carving predominates and which constitutes the most homogeneous section of the Museum. Marès also donated part of his own sculptural work, which is exhibited in his Study-library.
In the Collector's cabinet tens of thousands of objects are displayed that form a large collection of collections and document ways of life and customs of the past, mainly from the 19th century. You can find endearing and unusual items, such as fans, pipes, clocks, jewellery, photographs, toys, keys, pharmacy jars and reliquaries, which, presented in an intimate atmosphere, evoke the particular universe of Marès.
