In Barcelona we’re continuing to improve the quality of the lights on the city’s main streets, adding new routes and making it possible for hundreds of streets and squares to dress up in Christmas finery.

This year, for the first time, Passeig de Sant Joan will be lit up between Avinguda de Vilanova and Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes. The design of the lighting for this new space for the next three years is by Barcelona-based studio Brosmind, and the thematic motif is the comic.

The Christmas lights will also be twinkling in C/ Balmes, C/ Aragó, Ronda Sant Pere and Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, and in other streets included in the Neighbourhood Plan and places where long-term works are being carried out.

They will also be lighting up Pl. Urquinaona, Av. Paral·lel —between C/ Margarit and C/ Cabanes— and La Rambla, between Portal de la Pau and Pl. Catalunya. The designs from Estudi Arola will continue to adorn Pl. Catalunya, C/ Aragó and Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, and all of Barcelona's markets will once again be getting dressed up for Christmas.

The City Council has increased the total number of hours that the Christmas lights will be on: from 217 hours in previous years to 243,5 hours this year, with an extra day of lights. Even so, the hourly power consumption has decreased by 0.6%, representing an energy saving despite the extra day of consumption, with 45 days of Christmas lighting in all. The Christmas lights will be on between 23 November and 6 January at the following times:

  • Sunday to Thursday: 5.30 pm to 11 pm
  • Friday and Saturday: 5.30 pm to 12 pm. Until 11 pm up to 14 December.
  • 31 December and 5 January (exceptional days): 5.30 pm to 1.00 am
  • 23 November: lights come on at 6.30 pm

Barcelona City Council’s collaboration with the city's trade associations enables hundreds of streets and squares to be decorated.
