New area of dissemination at the Moll d’Espanya

Management and improvement of public space

District of Ciutat Vella

Precontent

In the coming years, the Port of Barcelona is planning a total revamp of the Moll d’Espanya. The Cinesa and Imax cinemas have been closed for some time and the port plans to tear them down in accordance with the Port Vell Special Plan 2012.

This area of opportunity was identified in the Coastal Plan, which initially proposed an area for marine awareness. However, the existence of other projects related to marine awareness, such as the Barcelona Sea of Science project or the Coastal Centre, together with the current situation, have meant that this project has evolved towards the creation of a cultural area in this space.

Therefore, the space vacated by the Imax will be occupied by a second venue of the Liceu – the Liceu Mar – which will be a multi-purpose hall with a capacity for 900 spectators. The building will consist of a stage box, pit, rehearsal rooms, dressing rooms, logistical set-up, etc. With regard to the space freed up by the Cinesa cinemas, it will be used to move Plaça de l’Odissea towards the aquarium, freeing up a 12-metre wide strip of space from its façade. There will also be the partial occupation of the current square for a hypothetical enlargement of the Maremàgnum building. Likewise, it will also be necessary to carry out urban development and road works to adapt the quay to the new reality.

This transformation, however, will have to be in accordance with the municipal transformations planned for the Via Laietana in order to have fast, safe and fluid communication between the city and this port area.
