A drawing of subdivision, urbanisation and building combined over time
"The second year of Urban Planning at ETSAB focuses on the study of the city and its components, examining both its physical form—shaped by geography, infrastructure, urban fabrics and distinctive elements—and the intangible phenomena that define it, such as its history, activities and flows.
The analysis of the urban fabric is grounded in the theory of Forms of Urban Growth, developed by Manuel de Solà-Morales in the 1970s. This approach views the city as the product of the sequential processes of subdivision, urbanisation and construction, resulting in diverse and meaningful urban fragments.
To mark Architecture Weeks 2025 and the 150th anniversary of the Barcelona School of Architecture, second-year students—more than 170 in total—will produce a collective drawing of the city at a scale of 1:10,000. Coordinated by the seven lecturers leading the course, each student will represent a 50 x 20 cm section. Together, these fragments will form a large 6 x 3 metre piece, offering a drawn, subjective vision of Barcelona and its metropolitan area as seen through the eyes of its future architects.
