A model of humanist social urban planning

This conference will introduce the public to a landmark of French social urban planning, constructed between 1929 and 1965, which is now under threat of demolition. The garden city comprises around 3,700 dwellings spread across 70 hectares, characterised by its distinctive topography and rich vegetation. Today, the site is in a state of decline, largely due to neglect by the local authorities and the social housing management body. Over 1,000 homes have already been condemned and boarded up, despite a severe housing crisis and increasing pressure to densify the area.

The association Châtenay Patrimoine Environnement, supported by other organisations and professionals from the field of architecture, is campaigning for the recognition of the heritage and social value of the development, originally promoted by Henri Sellier—a key figure in 20th-century housing policy.

The lecture will feature a photographic essay showcasing the architectural quality and historical depth of the complex.
