A journey through the historical memory of workers' housing in Barcelona
This guided tour offers a chance to explore two key spaces that highlight the evolution of workers' housing in the 20th century: the new facilities of the Cases Barataes (Cheap Houses) del Bon Pastor and the Casa Bloc.
The MUHBA Bon Pastor, located in a block of sixteen homes in this historic working-class neighbourhood – one of four housing estates built in Barcelona in 1929 – has been preserved as a museum to recover and explain the struggle for decent housing. Of the original group, ten houses are open to the public: four of them showcase everyday life and the evolution of interiors from 1929 to 2017, while the other six provide a thematic overview of the neighbourhood's demands and the wider context of housing in the city.
The tour concludes with a visit to the Casa Bloc, a paradigmatic example of rationalist architecture and a social project promoted during the Second Republic to improve working-class living conditions. Together, these two stops offer a complementary perspective on housing policies, urban development, and the collective memory of Barcelona's working-class neighbourhoods.
