Embroidering memory maps
"This practical embroidery and writing workshop explores everyday experiences in public spaces. By searching for a language that allows us to express and transmit our relationship with the local area, the goal is to narrate and represent the memory of our surroundings. The workshop aims to create a collective map that, as a tool of knowledge, fosters a deeper understanding of the geographical space and organisational structures that sustain life in the neighbourhood.
The proposal comprises two workshops in iconic neighbourhoods of Barcelona, where we will create new legends based on these maps. Firstly, through embroidery, we will reinterpret spatial legends inherent to urban planning, generating a more sensory and three-dimensional document.
Then, through writing, we will shape a legend that recounts day-to-day life and lived perceptions within this routine.
We propose a sensory cartography that breaks away from the concept of a two-dimensional map, reclaiming the folds of our world. Mapping current complex spatial perceptions will allow us to record experiences and gain a deep understanding of our lived realities.
In each workshop, participants will create their own textile and written map. Meanwhile, we will collectively craft a mosaic of shared places, perceptions and narratives. In the final session, we will reflect on traditional representation systems and move on to emotional representations that integrate both knowledge and feelings.
