The monument complex in Plaça del Rei has been the main site for the MUHBA since the museum was founded in 1943. The sites at the Plaça del Rei monument complex span several centuries of the city’s history, from the Roman-era “Barcino” of the 1st century BCE to the Visigoth-era “Barchinona” of the 7th century AD and 13th century medieval Barcelona. An underground visit offers a walk through Roman Barcelona where you can get a close look at the city walls of that period, step into a 2nd century AD “dry cleaners”, see the traces of the city’s first Christian community, and more. The complex is rounded out by major medieval buildings, such as the Palau Major, the Capella de Santa Àgata and the Palau Gòtic, known as Casa Padellàs, which houses temporary exhibitions on modern and contemporary Barcelona.
