Avinguda Meridiana

Rambla stretch, between c/Independència and c/Aragó; boulevard stretch (with a bike lane in the central reservation), between c/Aragó and c/Felip II.

After a review of the role of av. Meridiana in the city, leading to the construction of the Ronda ring roads and representing an initial improvement of the avenue, a new intervention is required in this strategic city axis, in the stretch between pl. Glòries and the Nus de la Trinitat cloverleaf.

The aim of this intervention is to turn the avenue into a civic axis of reference for the city: a peaceful, green, people-friendly avenue. In order to work together with local organizations in accordance with the strategies and criteria that are to guide the intervention, the Participation Table of the Avinguda Meridiana project was set up, bringing together organizations, municipal technicians, political groups and members of the government. By means of workshops, conferences and work sessions led by the Participation Board and open to all citizens, the outline criteria for the new Meridiana were defined. To be able to move forward with the project, the avenue has been divided into stretches that will be addressed differently according to their respective issues. Meridiana is being addressed globally and by areas, but it will be studied and the necessary actions taken progressively, in sections.

In an initial phase, work has been done on 43,500 m2, where new seating areas have been created for the neighbourhood, with wider pavements, more trees and vegetation, children’s playgrounds, street furniture and new lighting. In the stretch between c/Independència and c/Aragó, a 16-m-wide central promenade has been planned, and a segregated bike lane built.

Between c/Mallorca and the junction of c/Navas de Tolosa with c/Josep Estivill, a median strip has been created with a bike lane and vegetation, the traffic lanes have been reduced to three in each direction, and the pavements have been reserved for pedestrians. Starting in autumn 2022, this renovation of Meridiana will extend to c/Felip II. The section of the new Meridiana will continue, with two lanes for general traffic and one for buses on each side, bicycles at the centre, and a segregated bike lane, wider pavements, and more trees and flowerbeds.
