World Capital of Architecture
Barcelona 2026, World Capital of Architecture

We are launching a call for applications to register spaces to provide venues to host Barcelona 2026 World Capital of Architecture events
This is why the Fundació Mies van der Rohe - Barcelona City Council are launching a call in which we are inviting organisations, institutions or individuals willing to offer their spaces to provide venues for the 2026 World Capital of Architecture events in order to open this architectural heritage up to citizens.
From 08 January to 14 February (deadline extended until 28 February 2025), all kinds of venues that can host one or several formats of events in the World Capital of Architecture programme can register: exhibitions, debates/lectures, book launches, film or documentary screenings, workshops, etc. These venues should preferably be located within Barcelona city limits or in municipalities in its metropolitan area, although venues in other towns will also be considered.
World Capital of Architecture
Barcelona is a city of architecture for the beauty and uniqueness of many of its buildings, for the way it cares for an architectural heritage that is centuries old, for its continued commitment to offer welcoming, accessible and inclusive public spaces.
Barcelona has been named World Capital of Architecture 2026 by UNESCO-UIA. The architecture, urban planning and landscaping of a diverse, dense city, with limited natural resources and a Mediterranean climate – which is fresh and sunny, but with drought and heat waves – faces challenges of economic, social and environmental sustainability.

Call for proposals for the World Capital of Architecture
As part of Barcelona’s designation as the World Capital of Architecture for 2026 by UNESCO-UIA, the Fundació Mies van der Rohe – Barcelona City Council is launching a call for proposals open to all professional and cultural entities, institutions, and schools that wish to participate.
From 5 September until 15 October, you can submit your proposals and help design a comprehensive programme of exhibitions, tours, workshops, open houses, installations, conferences, and competitions designed for the public, spread across the city’s 10 districts.
International competition of ideas for young architects
Within the framework of Barcelona being named World Capital of Architecture 2026 by UNESCO-UIA, the Fundació Mies van der Rohe – Barcelona City Council is launching this international competition of ideas to remodel 10 permanent party walls of the city, spread across its 10 districts, and it is inviting the entire international community of young architects to get involved. The competition jury will select, for each location, a winning entry from among those presented at that location, as well as a second and third prize.

Architecture Weeks 2025
From May 12 to June 28, 2025, Barcelona will host its annual Architecture Weeks, seven weeks filled with a wide range of events aimed at strengthening the connection between the city’s architecture and its residents. Barcelona boasts an urban heritage of undeniable value. Architecture shapes the physical space in which citizens’ lives unfold, and for this reason, since its inception in 2017, Architecture Weeks has aimed to reinforce this essential bond between architecture and the public.
Organised by Barcelona City Council and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe, Architecture Weeks is an initiative open to the participation and collaboration of organisations dedicated to promoting architecture in our city, as well as those representing various social, cultural and artistic disciplines. Our goal is for this edition to serve as the precursor to Barcelona 2026, World Capital of Architecture.
