Turó de la Peira Municipal Sports Centre

Before the present-day Turó de la Peira Municipal Sports Centre was built, there was a swimming pool and an outdated sports court jammed between buildings, in a hard surround of paving and concrete. These two amenities were brought together in a single building, with the heated pool on the ground floor and the multisport court on the upper floor. This freed up space for the construction of gardens in the courtyard at the centre of the street block, with native vegetation and permeable ground. The project opted for energy efficiency and self-sufficiency in the form of passive architecture, skylights and windows, monitored with sensors that guarantee natural ventilation and lighting. Since it is semi-undergrounded, the façade surface is minimized and thermal loss avoided. The building’s insulation adapts to its orientation. The building uses an aerothermal system to produce hot water. The lighting has power regulation systems according to the natural lighting. The entire roof is covered with photovoltaic panels that can generate 90% of the energy needed. A laminated timber structure was used to reduce the ecological footprint. The building is surrounded by a hydroponic green gallery that reduces solar radiation on three of its façades. Rainwater collected in a tank in the basement is used to water the plants in the green façade.
