Protecting the historical fabric of Gràcia

The updating of Gràcia’s historical heritage list serves to reassess and extend the protection of this old town’s traditional urban fabric to prevent any singular buildings being lost as a result of not being appropriately listed and protected.

The Special Plan for urban preservation and protection of the heritage of Gràcia has been carried out in the Vila de Gràcia old town and in parts of the neighbourhoods of La Salut, Vallcarca and Camp d’en Grassot and Gràcia Nova. The aim of extending the list is to maintain the district’s traditional nature, promote rehabilitation and stop the replacement of buildings, and to protect heritage from speculation.

The old town of Gràcia was originally designed as a garden city, where green areas and squares were the main protagonists of the urban planning model. Since the sixties, however, the traditional fabric has been threatened by property speculation and the destruction of heritage, leading to a significant loss of unique, emblematic places and buildings.

The extension of the traditional heritage list is intended to recover the original layout of districts, and responds to local residents’ demands to protect unique elements in neighbourhoods. This involves implementing integrated protection that goes beyond the traditional model aimed just at architecture and homogenous complexes. The objective is also to safeguard the plots, houses and private spaces that are linked to the formation and origin of Gràcia, and to implement proposals aimed at promoting the maintenance and rehabilitation of housing and environmental sustainability.
