Summer in the musuems: Ideas for enjoying the city’s cultural spaces

Museums and heritage spaces are organising exhibitions, workshops, concerts, screenings and family activities in the summer months, from the end of July to September.

“Summer in the museums” is here! Facilities such as the Arxiu Històric de la Ciutat de Barcelona, the Museu Picasso, the MACBA, the Museu Marítim, the CCCB and the Fundació Joan Miró are just some of the many spaces in the city looking to turn the summer holidays into an opportunity to discover, learn about and enjoy culture in all its forms. Here are some of the options to choose from:

At the Castell de Montjuïc there are guided tours in Catalan, Spanish and English, from Monday to Friday, between 25 June and 5 September. Participants will get to see the best-known parts of the castle, accompanied by a guide.

At the Arxiu Històric de la Ciutat de Barcelona, there’s a chance to visit the installation La sala de les paraules until 30 September, highlighting the instruments and documents of archival and documentary disciplines.

The Biblioteca Arús is holding Summer Evenings every Tuesday from July to 23 September (through Cases Singulars). These will reveal a unique space and an exceptional collection by Joan Proubasta, devoted to the character of Sherlock Holmes.

The Museu d’Història de Barcelona is offering different activities depending on the site. Hence “El Born at Night”, a summer classic in the city, offers exclusive guided evening tours in El Born to discover the history of the city of the 18th century. The Museu d’Història de Barcelona also offers three morning workshops for children aged from 6 to 12, from 25 to 27 June, 10 am to 2 pm. The three activities are “Arqueòlegs al Born”, “Descobrim Barcino!” and “La ciutat de la xocolata”, Finally, this summer also sees the museum offering a series of activities outside of the usual times, with tours behind closed doors.

At Park Güell, there are guided tours and routes, plus the concert cycle Barcelona, el violí i la música, and the film cycle Barcelona en Moviment 2025, cinema amb mirada de dona.

At the Museu Etnològic i de Cultures del Món – Seu Parc Montjuïc a museum visit with a gender perspective is being organised for 6 July, and on the same day there’s a guide tour of the temporary exhibition Barcelona, ciutat gegant. 600 anys de festa i tradició. On 15 July, the museum is hosting the public presentation of the research Una Mirada LGTBI+ al MuEC, with the experts Simón Perera del Rosario and Joan Martí i Ventura. On 23 July, as part of the local festival in Poble-sec and in collaboration with local community centres, there’s also an activity linked to the exhibition about giants.

At the Museu Etnològic i de Cultures del Món – Seu Montcada, the Relats Sonors Asian culture cycle continues from 28 June to 19 July. Here, music and calligraphy offer channels of sensuality, emotion and transformation. The museum’s site in C/ Montcada is also offering a tour on 6 July, with comments on the work 4 peces, 4 continents, plus some express guided tours between 13 July and 14 September, of the temporary exhibition Maya Deren. Una cadència d’imatges. Finally, there’s also a chance to enjoy the family workshop Màscares i superpoders. Un viatge per Àfrica i Oceania.

The Disseny Hub Barcelona (DHub) is offering guided tours of its permanent exhibition and is also opening Miguel Milá. (Pre) industrial designer, about one the pioneers of design in Spain, Miguel Milá Sagnier. This summer also brings the inauguration on 2 July of How to Design a Revolution: The Chilean Road to Design, about graphic and industrial design during the government of Salvador Allende in Chile (1970-1973). MATERFAD and the IAAC will also be bringing the exhibition Cacau to the DHub from 1 July to 1 August, looking at products made with residue from the production of cacao. In addition, the museum will be organising guided tours of the Casa Bloc and some summer activity camps.

At La Virreina Centre de la Imatge you can find five exhibitions until the end of September; Sara Gómez. La meva aportació; Eugenio Barba / Odin Teatret. Autopenetració; Cathy Berberian. Stripsody; Álvaro Perdices. Cultivar l’estrany, and Sergi Aguilar. Contrapunt.

At La Capella there are three new exhibitions in July: Repetir Curvar Coincidir, by Milena Rossignoli; Insania, by Heidi Valda, and La quema, by Elena del Rivero.

At the Fabra i Coats: Centre d’Art Contemporani, these are the final weeks to discover the exhibition Amable informal, open until 6 July and curated by Pilar Cruz. At the same venue, up to 20 July you can visit Les flors que creixen en l’abisme que soc, with the pieces that made the final of the Miquel Casablancas 2025 call, organised by Sant Andreu Contemporani. Both exhibitions are offering guided tours, with the one on 2 July for Les flors que creixen en l’abisme que soc accompanied by a performance from Daniel Cao.

The Reial Monestir de Santa Maria de Pedralbes becomes an evening concert venue in the summer, with three concerts by female artists: the women’s choir Voxalba, the singer and instrumentalist Carola Ortiz and the soprano Núria Rial. The monastery also offers a “Magic Hour”, opening up its cloister from 6 pm to 9 pm every Tuesday and Friday until 19 September. The monastery also offers guided tours and workshops.

At the Fundació Joan Miró there’s also music to enjoy on 3 July, with a concert by the artists Naguiyami and Crystal Murray. As part of the Barcelona Grec Festival 2025, the foundation is also offering a reinterpretation during the afternoon of 19 July of the installation “Aigua bellugada”, created on the northern terrace by Hugo Roelandt in 1986, based on the transportation, assembly and display of a material of irreducible definition: water. The percussionist and improvisor Núria Andorrà is the protagonist.

The Museu Picasso de Barcelona is offering the tour Teixint xarxes on Friday, 27 June, 25 July, 29 August and 26 September. The same museum will be offering guided tours this summer and the family workshop Grata, ratlla, retalla i estampa! Descobrim el Picasso gravador.

At the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB), the Pati de les Dones is again the setting for the annual outdoor film cycle Gandules, which has now been going for fifteen years. As part of the D’A – Festival Cinema Barcelona, five new films shot in Barcelona and other cities in the metropolitan area as part of the audiovisual project Simfonies de Ciutat are being shown, Also at the CCCB, there’s a chance to enjoy the family space Petites, mitjanes i grans.

At the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) you can see the exhibition He après a nedar en sec, by Coco Fusco, as well as Carlos Motta. Pregàries de resistència, which looks at the body, dissidence and memory as forms of political and affective resistance. On 15 September, Col·lecció MACBA. Preludi. Intenció poética invites visitors to read the collection through listening, intuition and an open mind. Guided tours will be offered for all of these options.

At the Museu Olímpic i de l’Esport Joan Antoni Samaranch, the museum is also joining in with the  celebrations with activities such as Descobreix els amics d’en Cobi, a workshop about disability and sport and a screening of films from the BCN Sports Film Festival.

At the Museu de la Música de Barcelona, on 26 June and on the occasion of Ara canto per a mi, the art historian Maria Garganté will be talking about the role of women in the Confraries del Roser and there’s a concert by Ana Malta (vocals) and Oscar Aldama (piano). In addition, from 8 to 20 July, the museum is offering a workshop and a participatory sound installation based on the work Stripsody (1966) by Cathy Berberian. Finally, on every Sunday in July there are guided tours of the permanent exhibition. On 18 September there’s a chance to take part in the workshop Tocs i tonades de pandero quadrat.

At the Museu de Ciències Naturals de Barcelona you’ll find the family science nest, a space for experimenting with evocative natural materials, aimed at children under the age of six. The museum is also offering the activity Flipbooks! Animals invisibles, aimed at all audiences aged from 7 upwards, and there’s a chance to enjoy a carefully chosen selection of board games with natural science content to see nature though different eyes. The Terrat Viu is also reopening on the rooftop at the weekends. At the Jardí Botànic de Barcelona you can take part in the family clue trail Em roda el cap! or discover the site with the activity Motxilla per a naturalistes. On 6 July the Jardí Botànic Històric also becomes an open-air cinema where you can watch La casa, by Álex Montoya.

The Museu Marítim de Barcelona is offering L’orgull a l’univers in the summer, an activity about different celestial bodies and the way that certain cultures have linked them to LGBTIQA+ characters or stories that break with the norm. On 10 July, the museum is also inaugurating the exhibition SOS oceans! La colla PATAPUM al rescat, designed for families to enjoy, and to learn about everything linked with the adventure of sailing in a play area.

At the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya you can see Des del centre from 21 June to 11 September, a multimedia installation by the video art pioneer Eugènia Balcells.

In addition, the Museu de Ciències Naturals and the Jardí Botànic de Barcelona, the Museu Marítim de Barcelona, the Museu Olímpic i de l’Esport and the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona are joining forces again this year for a new edition of the Museum Quiz Summer Tour, a team game played at each of the four participating museums, from 3 to 15 July, between 9 pm and 11 pm. This is a free activity with booking in advance.

Finally, many museums and heritage spaces in the city are also organising activities you won’t want to miss (Museu de la Xocolata de Barcelona, Casa Museu Amatller, Museu d’Arqueologia de Catalunya, Museu Egipci, CaixaForum Barcelona, Santa Mònica, Museu d’Història de Catalunya…).
