Tribute to the victims on the 8th anniversary of the 17 August attacks on La Rambla
At the Pla de l’Ós, on La Rambla, a ceremony has been held to remember and pay tribute to all the victims of the 17 August 2017 attacks, during which relatives, friends, municipal representatives and members of the public laid flowers and observed a minute’s silence. In the attack, 16 people lost their lives and more than 100 others of up to 35 different nationalities were injured.
The floral tribute was placed in front of the memorial to the attacks, installed in 2019 beside Joan Miró’s mosaic, which bears the words “May peace shield you, city of peace”.
The phrase first appeared in Arabic in one of the many spontaneous displays of mourning that people from all over left on La Rambla, and is now also reproduced in Catalan, Spanish and English. It is accompanied by the artwork Barcelona by artist Frederic Amat, as well as the exact date and time of the events: “17.08.2017. 16:50 h”.
In the days following the attack, members of the public left more than twelve thousand objects and documents as expressions of mourning at the site, which can now be viewed on the Memorial La Rambla 17A website.
