Call to protect sustainable local production in cities
In an effort to tackle the Covid-19 crisis, the twenty-four municipalities making up the Agroecologia city network, among them Barcelona, are calling on public administrations to protect sustainable local production, local distribution channels and community networks that help get food to those most in need.
The Agroecologia network is pushing for more backing and protection for sustainable local food networks to help move towards the reconstruction process once the Covid-19 crisis ends. The network is using the campaign #AlimentaciónEsSalud to point out how taking care of food and agro-policies is essential for protecting people’s health and the environment properly.

Initiatives to promote local commerce in the city
In line with the different measures adopted in relation to the supply of food during the Covid-19 crisis, various initiatives are under way in the city to help local commerce and municipal markets, with support to guarantee continuity for producers, sellers and consumer cooperatives.
The website ‘Barcelona des de casa’ has a new section promoting local commerce and produce. The section provides users with resources and contact details for food services offering home delivery, with the emphasis on those offering products from the local area.
The initiative provides information on markets offering customers the possibility of purchasing from home, contact details for municipal markets and commerce selling local produce in the city and details of agricultural producers offering home sales and deliveries. It also includes information on community support networks in the city and the supply of food for vulnerable groups.
These actions form part of a package of measures which the City Council has adopted to facilitate the food supply in the city: monitoring of the main distribution channels such as Mercabarna, ongoing contact with markets and food businesses, broadening of food-related social services and the initiation of new occasional home-delivery operations for groups at risk.
