A totally accessible play area in Plaça Joanic

The district of Gràcia has a new play area of 240 square metres, with recreational zones accessible to all children. The square is divided into two connecting parts: one zone with spaces for kids to hide in and express themselves, and another with playground features allowing them to swing, climb and slide. The new design for the square took on board the recommendations of the Independent Living Accessibility Network (XAVI) and the Municipal Institute for People with Disabilities (IMPD) to make the area completely inclusive.

The play area in Plaça Joanic, in the district of Gràcia, allows everybody to play there as it in an inclusive space. To make this possible, the entire space has been paved with natural rubber and the fencing around the play area in the centre of the square removed.

A new connection has also been created between the play area and C/ Escorial, and all recreational elements renewed. The area features swings with baskets and an accessible chair, two climbing mounds with different slopes, two sandpit tables at different heights and a table which can be moved horizontally.

Even though 23 of the city’s 900 plus play areas are currently accessible, a further fifty projects are planned or in progress so that the city is a place everybody can play in. An accessible play area is soon to be opened in the Parc de la Creueta del Coll, also in the district of Gràcia.
