Over 80 school playgrounds open up to neighbourhoods at weekends
Playgrounds at municipal nursery schools, primary, secondary and all-through schools all around the city are opening up on Fridays and over the weekends, with morning and afternoon opening times, to become public spaces outside of curricular hours.
Playgrounds at 84 schools are opening up to the public in all city districts during the 2025-2026 school year.
Specifically, 64 primary, secondary and all-through schools will be doing so on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, catering for children, teenagers and the general public. Twenty municipal nursery schools will also be opening on Saturdays from 10.30 am to 1 am for families with children up to the age of six.
In the case of municipal nursery schools, families will be able to enjoy facilities, with free open and autonomous access to play elements such as sandpits and spaces for movement, as well as stories for young children.
Each open school playground has a service with monitors that open and close them at the scheduled times, strive for the correct use of facilities and aim to establish engagement between children and young people.
The Open Playgrounds programme is an initiative by Barcelona City Council with the collaboration of the Barcelona Education Consortium (CEB), the city’s districts and various social and education organisations. The aim is to optimise the use of schools to boost the social and educational side of these spaces, offering them to families and to children and teenagers for collective use and activities, in a safe and local setting outside of school hours.
The list of open playgrounds in each district, as well as their opening hours, can be found on this website.
