Montjuïc funicular closes for work on the wastewater system in Vila i Vilà
This infrastructure system will help protect the entire Paral·lel area in the lower part of the Raval and Poble-sec neighbourhoods in episodes of intense rain. The new stage of the work obliges the Montjuïc funicular to close from 20 October to the end of March, with an alternative bus service covering the route.
Surface mobility will be affected, with the closure of Nou de la Rambla on the corner with Vila i Vilà during this period. The 121 neighbourhood bus service will change its route to avoid the sections closed.
The installation of the wastewater pipe entails the demolition of a section of the access corridor to the funicular from the Paral·lel metro station (L2 and L3), and the rerouting of most existing services. This will make it unworkable for passengers to access the funicular, which carries 3,000 passengers a day.
Alternative bus service
During this period, Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) will be offering a shuttle bus service covering the route between the two stations, ascending via Av. Miramar and descending via Av. Estadi, Pg. Santa Madrona and C/ Lleida.
The shuttle service will have the same timetable as the affected installation (Monday to Friday, 7.30 am to 8 pm, and Saturday, Sunday and public holidays from 9 am to 8 pm), with buses passing every 7 to 8 minutes from 7.30 am to 3 pm (four buses) and every 10 to 12 minutes from 3 pm to 8 pm (three buses). The latter will also apply on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.
Flood prevention in Paral·lel
The goal of this new wastewater system, one of the main infrastructures in the #PlaClima, is to increase drainage capacity in episodes of heavy rain and mitigate the flooding problems that arise in the lower part of Ciutat Vella and Poble-sec.
