A city that plays!
Over 900 children’s play areas, school playgrounds that open at the weekends, games in squares and other special options… For the International Day of Play we stand up for play as a children’s right and a way of understanding the city. Activities are being organised in streets and squares in all districts until 13 June.
Over 11,000 children were born in Barcelona in 2024, and the city is home to some 200,000 people under the age of 16. For them, and particularly for toddlers and children under the age of 12, the city offers a wide range of spaces to play in, located around all city districts.
How many play areas are there in Barcelona?
Over 900. Children’s play areas include elements that favour the interpretation of roles and collective play, structures for climbing or jumping to build strength and balance, sandpits and trunks for more relaxing play, plus spaces to freshen up in and play with water, activated during the summer.
Thirteen areas are unique spaces, much larger and featuring singular elements recreating imaginary worlds to favour the symbolic immersion of children and various uses during play.
Regardless of age, interests and abilities, the goal is for all children to have access to play elements in a nearby area. In addition, the first ten 100% accessible play areas are also being implemented, with the first already inaugurated in Pl. Emili Mira.
Playing in squares
Fifty city squares form part of the programme “Let’s play in squares”, offering free time activities in public space.
Various services organise activities that include sport, board games, games for babies, artistic activities and much more.
Open playgrounds
The city’s school playgrounds open up as a space for public use by children, teenagers and families, with everybody able to use them outside of school hours, at weekends and during the school holidays.
In all, 63 schools and 20 nursery schools are part of this initiative, opening at different times and on different days.
During the summer holidays, from 25 June to 31 August, a total of 44 playgrounds around the city’s public operated schools and nursery schools are being opened up.
0-99 Play Area in the Parc de les Glòries
The 0-99 Play Area, a games kiosk located in the Clariana in the Parc de les Glòries, opens every Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the year and loans play materials and board games to people, with options for users of all ages.
A space of around 150 square metres is also available around the kiosk, with tables, chairs, parasols and corners where people can play in the open-air.
Various special activities have also been organised in all city districts on the occasion of the International Day of Play.
