Gold Medals for Sports Merit to Pere Miró and Rafel Niubò
December’s full council meeting approved the award of the Gold Medal for Sport Merit to Pere Miró Sellarés, for promoting Olympic values around the world, and to Rafel Niubò Baqué, as an international role model and promotor of sport as a cornerstone for people’s lifestyle.
Pere Miró Sellarés
Born in Manresa in 1955, the medal recognises his professional career at the service of sport at both local and international level. Miró started out at as a sportsman with the Club Natació Manresa and ended up holding various high-ranking positions within the International Olympic Committee, where he has worked for more than thirty years.
During this period, he was the technical director of the IOC, the director of Olympic Solidarity, the director of Relations with National Olympic Committees and, finally, the adjunct director general of the body, as well as a special advisor to Thomas Bach. From his role as the direct of the INEF in Catalonia to heading sports solidarity programmes around the world, his work has always had a clear commitment to equal opportunities, the promotion of sport as a tool for cohesion and the defence of Olympic values.
As a councillor with the City Council and member of the team directing the Olympic Games of 1992, he made a decisive contribution to of one of the most important moments in the city’s contemporary history, leaving an imprint that still lasts today. His leadership at the head of Olympic Solidarity has been fundamental in ensuring access to sport in developing countries, contributing decisively to the dissemination of Olympic values around the world.
Rafel Niubò Baqué
Founder of the Les Corts Sports Initiation School and the Barcelona Union of Sports Activities (UBAE), where he held the position of director general. Niubò has been part of the European Union Sports Forum and the foundation for the European Sports and Health Confederation, which he headed from 1995 to 2003.
Later he was the Secretary General for Sport with the Government of Catalonia (2004-2006), where one of the initiatives he was involved in was to promote Catalan national teams. In this respect he received the Gold Medal from the Union of Sports Federations of Catalonia (2009).
