Barcelona’s population stabilises at 1.7 million people
The analysis of the census shows a new increase in the number of people officially residing in the city, rising to the highest number in forty years thanks to immigration. The number of centenarians is also up, while the volume of births and deaths remains unchanged.
According to figures published by the Municipal Data Office at the City Council, as of 1 January 2025, the register of registered residents showed that the city had 1,732,066 people, an increase of 46,000 compared to last year. The average age stands at 44.4 years old, with more women than men in the city.
Diverse city
Once again, the number of people born in the city is lower than the number of residents born somewhere other than Barcelona. The native population represents 45% of the total. Foreign residents account for around 613,000 people, with 182 different nationalities.
Argentina is the country with the most nationals officially residing in the city, followed by Colombia, Peru, Venezuela, Pakistan and Morocco. The population of people with Spanish nationality is also up slightly, by 0.4%.
Some 36.9% of city residents aged over 16 have a university qualification or higher vocational training qualification. The difference between men (34.7%) and women (38.9%) is more accentuated.
Households and births
Out of nearly 700,000 households included in the census, nearly a third consist of one person, and only one in five have children living in them. In terms of births and deaths, a little over 11,000 babies were born in 2024, the lowest volume since the year 1900, with the exception of 1929. The most popular names chosen for girls are Sofia, Olivia, Emma, Lucia and Ona. For boys, the most popular names are Mateo, Bruno, Leo, Pol and Jan.
Mortality dropped to 14,680 deaths. People aged a hundred or more reached record levels: there are 1,104 (9.6% more compared to last year), with women in the absolute majority.
The predominant profile of people leaving Barcelona corresponds to young people of Spanish nationality moving to the rest of Catalonia (67.4%) and the rest of Spain (24.1%), Internal migration between city districts is stable.
