Green light to renovate the Mercat de la Boqueria and promote it as a unique food market
The Traders’ Association at the Mercat de la Boqueria backed the overall revamp of the site with more than 90% voting in favour. With an investment of at least 12 million euros, the plan aims to rebuild the fish section, improve entrances and services, install solar panelling and approve a new regulation to ensure a balance between traditional and pre-prepared products. Work will get under way next summer and should be completed in 2027.

The revamp will work on the structural aspect and comfort of the space. The toilets will be renewed, along with the air-conditioning and office building. Work will also be done on the façade giving onto Pl. Gardunya, improving accessibility and opening up a central aisle to improve circulation and ventilate the market. One of the main changes will be the complete renewal of the fish stall section, an iconic space for many visitors and regular customers.
As for the range of stalls, the new regulation approved by stallholders establishes that at least half must sell traditional produce and that pre-prepared products can not exceed 50% of the overall range of products on sale. The goal is to preserve the market’s singular food character and ensure a balance with produce adapted to new consumption habits.
As for energy efficiency, the fibrocement rooftop will be replaced with solar panelling as part of the municipal plan to make markets more energy self-sufficient. This should cut consumption and emissions alike, in line with the city’s sustainability commitments.
