Sant Jordi Club to be covered with solar panelling

The Olympic Ring makes further progress in its commitment to sustainability with plans to install 896 solar panels on the 2,300 square metres of the rooftop of the Sant Jordi Club. The project should be completed in under a year and should generate 655,000 kWh a year, equivalent to the annual consumption of 200 homes.

The power generated by the solar panels, along with those to be installed at a later date on the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium, should practically cover the overall ordinary energy needs of the set of buildings making up the Olympic Ring.

The installation will guarantee an annual saving of 89.1 tonnes of CO2, meaning a giant leap in the strategy for the ecological and environmental transition of the Olympic Ring.

The project comes in addition to other actions on energy at the Olympic Ring, such as the progressive installation of LEDs and the renewal of climate-control units with newer, more efficient models, cutting consumption by around 35% in the last ten years.

Selective waste disposal and recycling is also being promoted during events at the site, paying special attention to the elimination of single-use plastic bags, substituting them with compostable or reusable materials. In addition, the complex will look to help the circular economy wherever possible by giving reusable materials to social organisations.
