Three industrial units to become hubs for economic activity

The Mondragón corporation, Palo Alto BCN XRLAB and IACC are the winning projects to revitalise three unused industrial sites and create new hubs for innovation, attracting talent and investment which will diversify the city’s economy. In all cases, consideration was given to the capacity for fostering enterprise, business competitiveness, sustainability, knowledge of the sector for each activity hub and social return, as well as the way the projects fit in with the goals of the Barcelona Green Deal.

The strategic projects and the private partners which will be developing them in conjunction with the City Council and through Barcelona Activa have now been presented:

  • Mondragón, Industry Hub 4.0: will work on the Barcelona Circular Hub at the unit at C/ Ciutat d’Asunción, 16, in Sant Andreu, fostering new circular economy business models and providing support for the digital transformation of SMEs. The site will be home to start-ups and key businesses for 21st century industry. It will also offer ongoing business training.
  • UTE Palo Alto BCN XRLAB: made up of Ingenia Cultura, Arsmediatech and Lavinia Services, will be tasked with starting a hub for research, innovation and enterprise in the creative industries at Unit E of the Palo Alto site. This facility will specialise in the creation and dissemination of audiovisual projects based on new technologies applied in the spheres of culture, communication, videogames, leisure, education and new formats to suit different groups of people.
  • Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC): will develop the Barcelona Urban Tech in C/ Àvila, in Poblenou, which will offer programmes for training and attracting talent, support businesses in open innovation, experimental labs and measures to connect the hub with the local community and ecosystems. The site will house energy transition projects and work on energy for zero-emissions buildings, nanomaterials, big urban data and other areas.

Once the work is completed, the new innovation hubs will progressively become operative between 2024 and 2025, having an impact on 250 SMEs and start-ups and over 5,000 people a year through training, events and the creation of communities.
