Decorative fountain in Glòries closed for safety reasons

Since it opened, many people have used the Mirall d’Aigua to play with water, but that is not what it’s for. The City Council has taken the decision to close the fountain to avoid falls, slipping and other similar risks.

As a decorative fountain, the Mirall d’Aigua in Plaça de les Glòries is a not a space for bathing as the water is recirculated and unfit for consumption and the fountain is not suitable for play as there is a risk of slipping or falling.

The City Council has decided to stop the fountain in the summer to ensure people’s safety and avoid accidents.

In recent weeks the City Council had added more signage at the fountain, increasing no bathing signs from two to six, and had employed information staff to remind people of the rules and explain that the Parc de les Glòries has a children’s play area with water and authorised elements in it, devoted to recreational use and freshening up.

Authorised water spaces

The City Council has doubled the number of these spaces around the city this year: there are now eight areas with water as a play element, with the final steps currently being taken to add a ninth in the Raval neighbourhood.

Play areas with water can be found on the website.

Barcelona City Council reminds everybody that for safety reasons, bathing in fountains is not permitted under any circumstances, as set out in the municipal by-law on coexistence.
