Graffiti on the metro down by 80% thanks to the anti-graffiti plan
The surface space affected by the vandalism of TMB trains has been reduced from 50,804 square metres in 2021 to 9,695 this year. The detriment in service as a result of graffiti was six hours in 2024, which is down to 3 hours 20 minutes this year.
The new measures by TMB, in collaboration with the Mossos d’Esquadra police corps, included the installation of new video surveillance cameras, more security staff at different spaces around the metro network and the installation of side panels along stationary trains to impede vandalism. The improvements have helped cut the number of affected trains from 727 in 2020 to the current figure of 220.
Vandalism on the rail infrastructure has cost almost six million euros in the last five years. In 2020 the cost was 2,194,733 euros, which has been reduced to 418,824 euros in 2025. Graffiti cleaning includes high-pressure water jets, manual cleaning with nylon brushes and the use of elimination and neutralisation products.
