Emergency exit shafts completed at the Túnel de la Rovira

The three new emergency exits shafts at the Túnel de la Rovira have now been built and the access points opened on the ascending side. As from Tuesday, 18 November, traffic heading in the direction of the mountains will use the descending tunnel, while traffic heading in the direction of the sea will be restricted until the work is completed.

The construction of these shafts was one of the main goals of the work to improve the safety of the tunnel and bring it up to date.

The opening of the access points to the shaft was carried out in the ascending tunnel with an excavating machine making the most of the road closures at night, demolishing the concrete vaults. From the tunnelling process to now, work has been carried out on linings and weatherproofing, with tasks now being carried out on the installation stage.

Work has been carried out on the fissures in the descending tunnel and the joints have been reinforced to improve weatherproofing.  A perimeter wall has also been built, lighting and painting renewed and now work is focusing on the new installations.

The work in the Túnel de la Rovira, which links Baix Guinardó and El Carmel, has a budget of 18 million euros. The aim is to reopen it completely during the first quarter of 2026.
