The renovation of the inside of the Castell dels Tres Dragons is intended to regain this historical building and turn it into the gateway to the Parc de la Ciutadella, including a café-restaurant as it did in its early days.  The project also aims to promote the building’s cultural and scientific role, creating rooms for exhibitions and educational uses by the Museu de Ciències Naturals de Barcelona, with the creation of large auditorium and a space for specialised science library. As this is a listed building, the renovation project will have to respect numerous elements which must be preserved and renovated according to regulations.

Renovation of the outside in the autumn

The renovation of the outside façades of the Castell dels Tres Dragons has already been approved, with work set to start in November. The façade will be renovated, as will the porched area on the ground floor, the two central interior arches, the rooftops, the large balconies on the first floor and the stairs, plus some energy improvements. Work on the outside is due to be completed in February 2027, with work on the inside estimated to start in the second half of 2027.

Key part of the Ciutadella del Coneixement

Together with the Hivernacle, the Centre Martorell d’Exposicions and the Umbracle, the Castell dels Tres Dragons is part of the heritage area of the Ciutadella del Coneixement; a science and urban planning project to turn the park and its environs into a leading European hub for knowledge, dissemination, research and innovation.

The intention is for the building to act as a channel for transmission and dissemination for all the scientific knowledge generated in the areas of research at the Ciutadella del Coneixement, such as the research complex at the former Mercat del Peix, which will have three buildings devoted to biomedicine, biodiversity and planetary welfare, or the bioscience building that the CSIC will be constructing on the former site of the state vehicle fleet.
