Second trial for the 21st century paving stone in a section of Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes
The new ‘panot’ paving stone for the 21st century is to be installed in Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, in the section between Passeig de Gràcia and Rambla de Catalunya, on the side nearest the sea, to test the solution in a busy area. This is the second pilot project to test the winning project from the urban innovation challenge “The 21st century panot”, promoting the renewal of the city’s iconic paving stone with innovation and sustainability criteria.
This second trial carries on from the first, carried out in Poblenou in March. It also includes an interactive totem providing information in real time on the number of pedestrians who step on the paving stones.
If the results from this second trial are satisfactory, the new paving stones will gradually be included in future public works contracts, replacing the conventional stones. With this transition, Barcelona boosts its commitment to decarbonisation and circularity.
The three panot models are the winning solutions from the challenge launched by Barcelona City Council through the Fundació BIT Habitat in 2022, to jointly design the paving stone of the 21st century. The idea was to maintain the current design but introducing solutions based on the circular economy, and to reduce the carbon footprint.
