Proposals from municipal groups in the full council meeting of 26 April 2024

April’s full council meeting approved five proposals: one by Junts-TriasxBCN to open up a new scenario for dialogue, one from the PP to create a support office for property owners whose homes are occupied by squatters, and three proposals with content for an institutional declaration. These came from the PSC, to support the establishment of a Palestinian state, and others from BComú and the ERC, to decommission the police headquarters in Via Laietana. The meeting concluded with the reading of an institutional declaration.

The first proposal in the government control and input part of the meeting came from Junts per Catalunya – Trias per Barcelona, calling on the Mayor and the municipal government to open up a new scenario for dialogue and agreement to avoid a political standstill. The Full Council approved the proposal with votes from Junts-Trias×BCN and BComú, while the PSC voted against it and the ERC, the PP and Vox abstained.

The Partit Popular urged he municipal government to create an advisory office providing support for people who have a home occupied by squatters, plus a City Police unit that will work in conjunction with the Mossos d’Esquadra to tackle squatting. The Full Council approved the proposal with favourable votes from Junts-Trias×BCN, the PSC, the PP and Vox, while BComú and the ERC voted against it.

The proposal from Vox called for Spanish nationals to get priority when accessing social housing. The proposal was rejected, with Vox voting in favour, while Junts-Trias×BCN, the PSC, BComú and the ERC voted against it and the PP abstained.

Proposals with content for an institutional declaration

April’s full council meeting included three proposals with content for an institutional declaration, which were all approved.

The Partit dels Socialistes de Catalunya asked to give support to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state and for a peace summit to be held. The proposal was approved with votes from the PSC, BComú and the ERC, while the PP and Vox voted against it and Junts-Trias×BCN abstained.

In two proposals that were debated together, Barcelona en Comú and Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya called for the police headquarters in Via Laietana to be decommissioned as a police station and turned into a memorial space about the Francoist repression. The Full Council approved both proposals, with Junts-Trias×BCN, BComú and the ERC voting in favour, while the PP and Vox voted against them and the PSC abstained.

The meeting concluded with a reading of an institutional declaration to support public university education in Argentina. All the groups signed the document, except for the PP and Vox.
