The architects Pere Joan Ravetllat and Carles Enrich have designed large wooden structure of 1,400 square metres, which will remain once the temporary market ceases to operate and will be able to be used for activities in this green space. The site adds to the point where the green corridor of Horta’s riverbeds cross the urban layout of the old quarter, generating a new public space that connects neighbourhoods.

The 800 square metres of sales space houses 26 food establishments and 4 non-food stalls. The market has three entrances, the main one at the eastern corner of Lisboa/Porto. The special non-food stalls are located at the façade giving onto the new square, while the eastern façade has an annex of 109 square metres housing the exterior non-food stalls.

The market also includes a logistics space of 401 square metres, with communal refrigerator rooms, the communal storeroom and more. On the rooftop there is a space for the market’s air-conditioning machines. The building uses solar panelling on the rooftop and features a sustainable urban drainage system in its garden space, helping rainwater to drain naturally.

Sustainable facility

The partial reuse of the wooden structure, the urbanisation of the surroundings and the solar panelling generate a saving of 40% in the dismantling of the provisional market and 90% in the construction of the future production park.

A public celebration with music and family activities marked the opening of the provisional market.
