Barcelona: Intense, Diverse, Complex
This exhibition invites reflection on today’s Barcelona, a stage for an intricate network of human, economic and social relations.
Based on an evidence‑led gaze that moves beyond preconceptions—grounded in the observation of data and processes—the show invites us to recognise and value the elements that currently define and shape Barcelona, a dynamic, sustainable city in constant evolution.
The exhibition is structured around three fundamental concepts: the diversity of its population, the intensity of its urban fabric and the complexity of the relations that take place within it.
A diverse Barcelona, characterised by variety, which makes it unique and singular. This diversity stems from the dynamics of its demographic flows, the cultural richness of its population and successive generational shifts that transform it. A population that is far from static or purely local. The people of Barcelona form a space where cultural plurality drives social change and confers a distinctive identity.
An intense Barcelona, with a compactness and accessibility that make it almost unique. The balance between built space and open space hosts uses and activities—the setting for multiple social interactions and, ultimately, opportunities. This symbiosis creates an efficient configuration in which different building forms, common areas and functions coexist in proximity, generating a vibrant urban environment. An intensity that creates the conditions needed to make Barcelona a socially, economically and environmentally sustainable city.
A complex Barcelona, understood as a network where the interaction of its components gives the city an intrinsic unpredictability. Its evolution is inherently uncertain and susceptible to external factors. Nevertheless, the city maintains an unstable equilibrium, with a notable capacity to adapt and to generate creative solutions in the face of the unexpected.
Conceived from a rigorous perspective, this exhibition offers a framework to recognise and contextualise the processes that shape Barcelona today, highlighting the elements that make this possible. It also aims to contribute new perspectives to the ongoing debates on the present and future of cities and the societies that inhabit them.
