From Party Walls to Facades
Party walls are anonymous walls that divide properties. Although they play no role in the external appearance of the building, they can end up exposed to public view in a permanently provisional state due to changes in urban planning.
When this occurs, it creates a landscape discontinuity—a break in the urban fabric—that can cause serious structural and habitability problems for the affected and neighbouring buildings, as well as a significant visual impact on public space.
Twenty‑five years ago, with the aim of eliminating these urban discontinuities and creating new façades that would integrate into the urban landscape, the Barcelona Party Wall Remodelling Plan was launched.
Main objective of the competition
Within the nomination of Barcelona as UNESCO‑UIA World Capital of Architecture 2026, the Mies van der Rohe Foundation and Barcelona City Council are launching this international ideas competition to remodel ten party walls—one in each of the city’s ten districts—with the aim of leaving a lasting legacy for Barcelona, and they call on the global community of young architects to take part.
For each site, the jury selected a winning proposal, as well as second and third prizes, from among the entries submitted.
The winning proposals will be implemented throughout 2026 as part of the programme of activities and as a lasting material legacy of Barcelona 2026, UNESCO‑UIA World Capital of Architecture.
