Sant Pere de Rodes and the Master of Cabestany: The Construction of a Myth
The exhibition pays homage to the Master of Cabestany, the most singular and international sculptor of the Catalan Romanesque—considered by some the Picasso of the twelfth century—and to his masterpiece: the now‑lost portal of Sant Pere de Rodes (El Port de la Selva, Alt Empordà), dated around 1163.
The emergence of several pieces from that ensemble and the inclusion of part of it into the MNAC’s Romanesque collection have prompted an ambitious, far‑reaching show that seeks, on the one hand, to reappraise the originality and “modernity” of this itinerant artist within the European Romanesque—through his privileged dialogue with the art of Early Christian sarcophagi—and, on the other, to highlight the artistic dimension of the Benedictine abbey of Sant Pere de Rodes and its long, eventful heritage history.
