Optimism was made music in his best-known song, Don't Worry Be Happy, but the talent of a man who inspired a whole generation of beatboxers and a cappella singers does not end with that number. Now, Bobby McFerrin revisits North American spirituals accompanied by the SpiritYouAll Band.
Bobby McFerrin is considered, not only a vocal acrobat, having spent his life exploring the potential of the human voice as a musical instrument, but also as one of the most innovative jazz musicians in recent decades. His best-known hit is still played constantly on radio and television, but that does not mean that McFerrin has become becalmed in 1988 and the song that takes its inspiration from a famous expression by the Indian guru Meher Baba. With his new album, SpiritYouAll, the musician is engaged in reimagining Americana, exploring the world of spirituals. This is no chance development, for his father, Robert McFerrin Sr., was a renowned interpreter of spirituals and the first Afro-American to sing with the Metropolitan Opera Company. It is no surprise, then, that Bobby should decide to revisit his father’s repertoire, as well as performing highly personal versions of such songs as Bob Dylan’s I Shall Be Released and several new tracks, accompanied by such outstanding musicians as Esperanza Spalding, who also performed at the Grec in 2009 and 2012.
