Contra la democràcia

Esteve Soler / Carles Fernández Giua

After his work Contra el progrés had been selected by the Theatertreffen Festival of Berlin and staged all over Europe, the young playwright Esteve Soler met up with director Carles Fernández Giua in Les voyages de Kadmos, a programme promoted by the Kadmos network of European festivals, whose partners include the Grec Festival of Barcelona. Together, they began to work on a new play, one as iconoclastic as the previous one, but this time taking aim at democracy. For the seven short pieces that form this Contra la democràcia (Against Democracy) (subtitled 7 Small Grand Gignol Works) pour irony or even ridicule onto this system of political organisation, one so often placed on a pedestal as an untouchable myth or, to be precise, the deformed modern versions of democracy that we find in today’s world. Humour, sarcasm and uncomfortable truths in a text guaranteed to freeze the smile on our faces.
