Gravity & Other Myths / Orfeó Català Girls Choir

One of the most internationally renowned companies in contemporary Australian circus is back at the Grec with a monolithic work of scale that transforms audience, acrobat and choir into a single mesmerising organism.

Watch as a mountain of bodies crumble into an ocean of voice and towering human structures move with precision through an ever-changing web of rope. The Pulse, directed by Darcy Grant and composed by Ekrem Eli Phoenix, truly breaks new ground for circus arts, joining the extraordinary technique and skill of Gravity & Other Myths’ ensemble of twenty-four acrobats with the thirty-six exceptional local voices of the Orfeó Català Choir, conducted by Buia Reixach. The intricate, organic synchronicity of human movement and sound alludes to forces and ideas greater than ourselves. The result is a thrilling, unforgettable show that speaks to humanity’s ability to connect and help each other keep growing.

If the name of this company sounds familiar, that’s because they also appeared with Backbone at the 2019 edition of the Barcelona Grec Festival. The company, founded in Adelaide in 2009, has reached an audience of over 700,000 people worldwide in thirty-seven countries with their innovative shows. Their debut show, A Simple Space (2013) notched up its 1000th show early in 2023. Gravity & Other Myths approaches contemporary circus in a unique way and seeks to form a community with the artists in the countries they visit. That’s why they work with local companies, as is the case here, with a Barcelona choir providing the voices for what will be the opening act of Grec 2023.
