Trio da Kali / Lucy Duran

Under the guidance of ethnomusicologist Lucy Duran, Trio Da Kali are leading a ‘collaborative reimagination of musical heritage’, including that of Barcelona. The initiative includes activities like this family workshop.

During their stay in the city to perform a show they have called The Barcelona Experience, Trio Da Kali are drawing together the ancient Mande culture, the musical heritage of today’s Barcelona, and a series of Barcelona-based musicians, some of whom have African roots. They will be performing at the Teatre Grec, and also doing a residency at Fabra i Coats: Fàbrica de Creació de Barcelona, which will include activities like this workshop.

Participants in the ‘Tegere Tulon’ workshop will be introduced to the extensive repertoire of the griot tradition from southwestern Mali, all through forms of play and recreational music that are exclusively the domain of women and girls, and that are the source of many of the country’s popular songs. During this activity, attendees will be taught to sing in a circle and clap along. It’s a fun activity that appears to be quite simple, but it conceals a complex, challenging artistic task that really puts your motor skills and rhythmic and melodic coordination to the test. And it’s a great way of delving into the world of griots (jeli in Mande) right from its beginnings: in other words, the world of the girls who will grow up to be griot women.

In collaboration with L’Altre Festival.

In cooperation with Fabra i Coats: Fàbrica de creació.

Activity suitable for all audiences of all ages.

The activity is free, but prior registration is required. Booking link available soon.
