Barcelona has reactivated the Commission for Works and Mobility, a strategic political and technical body that has been inactive in recent years. The idea behind the move is to strengthen the control and monitoring of major works in public space, as well as to reduce disruptions to mobility and everyday life.

Chaired by the First Deputy Mayor, Laia Bonet, the commission now has a broader and more cross-cutting composition. Besides the usual heads in areas such as Mobility, Infrastructures, Urban Planning and Housing, the body now also includes representatives from Security, Prevention, the Fire Service and the City Police, as well as transport operators such as TMB and BIMSA. This comprehensive combination seeks to improve efficiency and effectiveness in the planning and coordination of major works, helping to reduce their impact.

In this respect, the Commission for Works and Mobility will particularly prioritise works linked to major transport infrastructures, taking into account impact, simultaneousness and metropolitan scale, ensuring that all necessary urban transformations are carried out with the minimum possible disruptions for citizens.

This is precisely why the recently reactivated commission will serve as a space for a cross-cutting joint assessment of work, covering municipal projects and those by other administrations and private operators alike. The Commission for Works and Mobility will therefore cover the task of the Committee for Works and Mobility in managing and evaluating disruption caused by works in the city that have an impact on public space, such as urban remodelling projects, transport infrastructures and road works.

With the reactivation of this body, the City Council reaffirms its commitment to a more efficient, coordinated and sensitive management of the works that transform the city. Now the Commission for Works and Mobility becomes a key tool for guaranteeing that these projects are carried out with strategic planning criteria, transparency and respect for people’s everyday lives.
