Carme Elias, Daniel Martínez and Marcos Morau to get the Gold Medal for Cultural Merit 2025
The Gold Medal for Cultural Merit is an award that recognises participation in the city’s cultural life and the contribution to international projection of the world of culture. The medals were approved in the full council meeting by Barcelona City Council on Friday, 21 November.
Carme Elias i Boada will receive the award for the indelible link between her professional career and the values that define Barcelona as an open, cult and sensitive city, committed to people. A theatre, television and film actress, she discovered her vocation in local theatre and studied at the Institut del Teatre. She made her professional theatre debut in 1974 with La señorita Julia. In 1981 she became well-known for her role in Terra baixa, by Àngel Guimerà. Her theatre activity dropped off in the 90s in favour of film and television after she received a film award from the Government of Catalonia in 1991 for her role in El pont de Varsòvia. Besides various Butaca awards, in 2008 she received a Goya for her leading role in the film Camino. In 2021 she received a Gaudí d’Honor, followed by the Creu de Sant Jordi in 2022. She has had parts in 39 films, over 20 theatre works and 15 television series.
The Gold Medal will also be awarded to Daniel Martínez de Obregón for a life devoted to art, culture and the city. Daniel Martínez is a theatre entrepreneur and one of the most influential figures in the performing arts in Catalonia and the Spanish state. In 1986 he founded the Grup Focus, one of the country’s main theatre producers. He has held important positions in the sector, he has been the chair of ADETCA (Associació d’Empreses de Teatre de Catalunya) since 1998, and of FAETEDA (Federació Estatal d’Associacions d’Empreses de Teatre i Dansa) since 2005. He is also a member of the Consell de Cultura de Barcelona and the Institut Català de les Indústries Culturals, as well as the secretary for the Cercle de Cultura. His work has earned him numerous awards, including the Creu de Sant Jordi, the Gold Medal for Merit in the Arts and two Max awards for the best theatre entrepreneur.
The Valencian choreographer Marcos Mora Ureña, known as Marcos Morau, will also receive the award for his contribution to the international projection of contemporary stage culture. His work has put dance and Catalan and Spanish stage creation on the world culture map with an innovative, committed and deeply human perspective. The choreographer has received international recognition and is the founder of the La Veronal company, specialising in contemporary dance and physical theatre. Trained in Barcelona and New York, his choreographic language is characterised by its fusion of abstract movement, image and dramaturgy, creating imaginary worlds that have been presented in more than thirty countries and at several prestigious festivals. Morau is the youngest person to be awarded the Spanish national dance award. In 2023 he was chosen as the best choreographer of the year by the German magazine Tanz. Since 2024 he has been an associated artist with the Staatsballet de Berlín, where he premieres new creations annually.
