Work under way to enlarge the nursery school network and improve air-conditioning

Work is being carried out this summer to improve 66 municipal nursery schools, including fixing repairs, changing worn-out paving and improving air-conditioning. In addition, work will start on two new nursery schools, the EBM Can Carreras and the EBM Casernes, with the EBM La Mar also to be enlarged. Between them, these three projects entail an investment of nearly 9 million euros.

The network of nursery schools is set to grow as work gets under way on two new centres, the EBM Can Carreras, in Nou Barris, and the EBM Casernes, in Sant Andreu, plus the enlargement of a third, the EBM La Mar, in Barceloneta, with an overall investment of nearly 7 million euros for these three projects.

In parallel, two million euros is being spent to improve existing schools. To tackle the heat this summer, air-conditioning systems will be repaired or replaced in 15 centres in all, including the EBM Alchemika. The 110 provisional units located around nursery schools will remain in place until repairs to existing installations have been completed. The IMEB has a further stock of 50 provisional units available in case any other emergency situations need to be resolved during the summer.

Soft paving in playgrounds at 38 nursery schools is to be replaced with other materials to help towards more comfortable temperatures, along with the installation of awnings, which has already been completed.

Specific work will also be carried out at schools that need it, and kitchens and thermostats repaired at nine centres.

Finally, a new air-conditioning system will be installed at the headquarters of the IMEB.

The  “Bressols pel Clima” strategy is a roadmap for the network of municipal nursery schools, enabling Barcelona City Council to carry out projects such as greening up playgrounds by adding more shade or greenery, and the installation of solar panelling to move towards a more sustainable energy model.
