Acquisition of the Antic Teatre approved
With an investment of 1,064,281,70 euros, the process gets under way to expropriate the building in the neighbourhood of Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i La Ribera, to add the venue as a new municipally owned facility, ensuring continuity and stability as a new space devoted to creation and the performing arts.
This is a decisive step in the expropriation of the building located at C/ Verdaguer i Callís, 12, currently home to the Antic Teatre, to ensure its public use and preserve its cultural function in the neighbourhood of Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i La Ribera, in the district of Ciutat Vella.
The move concentrates on the spaces that host cultural activity: the main floor, the mezzanine floor, the courtyard and the low entrance building, all classified as facilities of local character and heritage protection. This not only protects the building but also ensures its public use as a cultural centre and unique stage venue with over 20 years of consolidated use as a centre for local cultural experimentation and a meeting point for the local community. The acquisition of the Antic Teatre thus guarantees the continuity of this cultural legacy, preserving an essential space for creation for the city’s artistic community and consolidating Barcelona’s role as a driver for grassroots culture and support for contemporary creation.
The acquisition comes in addition to the recovery of El Molino, the purchase of the Teatre Arnau, the transformation of the Sala Paral·lel 62 and the addition of the Teatre Capitol, steps which correspond to the wish to guarantee that facilities with significant heritage and symbolic values continue to get stable public cultural use.
