Bicing notches up 100 million journeys since 2019
Bicing reaches an accumulated total of 100 million journeys since the service was launched in 2019, making it Europe’s second most used public bike-sharing service in terms of the total number of journeys, behind Paris, and the first in terms of the number of journeys per bicycle per day. The figures reaffirm the important role the service plays in the present and future of sustainable mobility in Barcelona.
The municipal fleet has a total of 8,000 bicycles and over 164,000 subscribers, making an average of 1.5 million journeys a month. Each bicycle is used an average of 7.1 times a day and the fleet as a whole covers over 47 million kilometres every year. There has been a continuous increase in the number of subscribers since the service was launched too, with a 7% increase in the first half of this year alone.
30 new Bicing stations
In an effort to improve connectivity between neighbourhoods, satisfy the parts of the city where demand is highest and extend the service to the mountain neighbourhoods, 30 new Bicing station have been launched this year. This expansion forms part of the announced rollout of 74 new stations, expected to be completed during 2026.
To bring the service closer to more citizens, nearly 30% of these new stations are in neighbourhoods in Sarrià – Sant Gervasi and Horta-Guinardó. The rest of the new anchor points are in different parts of the city, according to demand and accessibility.
400 new electric bikes
Electric bikes offer greater comfort for getting around the city, with 8 out of 10 journeys actually made with them. Because of this, the service as added a further 400 electric bikes.
The enlargement of the Bicing electric bike fleet implemented between 2024 and 2025 and the installation of 74 new stations entails a budget of 2.8 million euros.
