Located in the district of Les Corts, the L’Illa Municipal Multi-Purpose Sports Hall reopened this week having been completely remodelled and enlarged, doubling its capacity and improving its services and sports options considerably. The project is one of the most significant investments made at sports facilities in this area in recent years.

The revamped facility, of 4,300 square metres, now has two multi-purpose sports courts and as many as six horizontal courts allowing for simultaneous sports activity such as handball, volleyball, basketball, indoor football, rhythmic gymnastics and badminton. The facility is expected to cater for 1,100 users every weekday and between 600 and 800 people at weekends.

The official opening consisted of an open day and a public celebration, with the Mayor, Jaume Collboni, and the Councillor for Sports and for Les Corts, David Escudé, taking part.

The new sports hall adopts energy efficiency criteria such as solar panels, natural ventilation systems, a vertical garden and an architectural design that opts for natural light and sustainability. The project is also set to be completed in the coming months with improvements to its outside spaces, shared with two local schools, including green areas, urban furniture and bicycle parking.

The facility will be part of the city’s Network of Municipal Sports Facilities, managed by the Barcelona Institute of Sport.
