Children’s Proclamation to reflect on the right to family
Nearly 700 pupils in their third, fourth, fifth or sixth year of primary school at 24 schools and special education centres in Barcelona have now been tasked with writing the Children’s Proclamation, which this year will be based around the right to family.
How does the right to family influence children’s daily lives. What can we do to improve the quality of time with the family? Through various activities, children representing the different schools will investigate which actions, spaces and attitudes favour this right and between them draft the proclamation under the slogan “Barcelona, family city”, with the text to be read out on 10 February to start the festivities for Santa Eulàlia.
Children’s right to participate
The Children’s Proclamation is an educational programme to foster the promotion and dissemination of children’s rights and their recognition as full citizens, as set out in the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The first edition was held in 2004 and since then more than 11,500 pupils have taken part.
The Children’s Proclamation gives them an insight into Barcelona’s political institutions and citizen participation, giving them a chance to start off in participatory processes based on joint responsibility and active citizenship. The work done in the classroom during the academic year is a way of bringing children closer to Barcelona’s institutions.
