The Zoo is set to become a hub for biodiversity preservation

Looking ahead to 2030, Barcelona Zoo is embarking on a major transformation aimed at inspiring new generations to become active agents of change rather than mere spectators, by offering opportunities for learning, enjoyment and awareness raising. One of its upcoming initiatives is Bioscope, a knowledge centre dedicated to exploring the evolution of animal species through immersive multimedia and museum experiences.

As a key part of the Ciutadella Knowledge Hub project, Barcelona Zoo is undergoing a major transformation to become the new leading centre for the preservation of the planet’s biodiversity.

Future visitors will be able to explore the world’s most endangered species and habitats, and learn about the pioneering research and conservation projects that Barcelona Zoo carries out in partnership with Spain’s leading scientific institutions.

Bioscope: A space to learn about biodiversity and take action

One of the Zoo’s upcoming initiatives is Bioscope, a knowledge centre that will take visitors on an interactive and captivating journey through the origins and evolution of species.

Scheduled to open in 2030, the centre will include a 3,000 m² building and an outdoor area, bringing the total space to 7,200 m². It will be located in the northern part of Barcelona Zoo, at the intersection of Carrer de Wellington and Carrer de Pujades.

Bioscope will receive an investment of €18 million from BSM, and its design will be selected via an international architecture competition.

Aïllats: A project to explore island species

Aïllats will offer visitors an immersive, interactive experience that brings them closer to the unique world of island ecosystems — authentic natural laboratories of evolution. At the same time, it will highlight conservation and species reintroduction projects, including efforts to protect the Balearic midwife toad and the Pitiusas wall lizard.

Descobrim la Mediterrània: Celebrating Mediterranean hábitats

Descobrim la Mediterrània will be a spacious area where visitors can immerse themselves in a Mediterranean landscape and discover the region’s rich and important biodiversity. Visitors will also learn about environmental challenges and biodiversity loss in the region, as well as the Zoo’s ongoing preservation projects.

The Zoo: A key part of the Ciutadella Knowledge Hub

Spanning 13 hectares, Barcelona Zoo is the largest facility within the Ciutadella Knowledge Hub project, which is set to transform the Parc de la Ciutadella and its surroundings into a leading European hub for outreach, research and innovation.

The construction of a new park entrance on Carrer de Wellington will physically link Barcelona Zoo to the Knowledge Hub. Scheduled to open in 2027, the entrance will connect the Born and La Ribera neighbourhoods with the Vila Olímpica, giving the Zoo greater visibility.
